Where the numbers come from

One US fluid ounce is defined as exactly 29.5735295625 millilitres, and one US gallon as exactly 3.785411784 litres. Every figure on this page is derived from those definitions, so the cup, pint and quart rows follow exactly rather than from rounded approximations. Imperial units used in the UK differ: an imperial gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon, and an imperial fluid ounce is slightly smaller than a US one.
